Associate Director of Custom Research

Purpose:

The Associate Research Director manages the strategic and tactical direction of BusinessWeek Research Services (a full service custom research department).  Position is responsible for identifying research sales opportunities, solution selling and project management to support the development of BusinessWeek Research Services and the overall BusinessWeek brand among advertising and non-advertising clients and prospects.  This includes development, execution and analysis of primary research strategy/programs and projects for BusinessWeek ad sales as well as other BusinessWeek departments: marketing, circulation, business development, online, and editorial (when appropriate). 

Principal Accountabilities:
* Account Servicing:  Develop relationships with current and new BusinessWeek clients by leveraging BusinessWeek’s primary research capabilities such as the BusinessWeek Market Advisory Board (online panel).  The Associate Research Director meets and interacts with clients to discuss research objectives, methodologies, and research solution strategies. 

*Business Development:  Grow existing base of paid research clients by identifying high potential targets and maximizing leads generated by BusinessWeek’s advertising sales force.   Business development will also include new product development such as category studies focusing on various markets and audiences, new syndicated reports such as whitepapers, and panel development.

 *Sales Goals & Budgeting:  The Associate Research Director is responsible for generating paid research revenue in 2009, and responsible for tracking advertising revenue associated with merchandising research projects.   The Associate Research director is also responsible for managing all primary research budgets and for tracking research revenue generation.

*Project Management:   Implementation and management of all facets pertaining to primary research projects.  This includes methodology evaluation and selection, questionnaire design (fieldwork) of studies.  Project management also includes coordinating with outside research suppliers and specialized consults to package the results of primary research conducted for BusinessWeek clients.

 *Marketing Development:  Create exposure for BusinessWeek Research Services by attending and presenting research at relevant industry events, conferences and web casts.   Develop marketing partnerships with research suppliers and consultants to generate non-advertising revenue.

*Work with BusinessWeek marketing department to create compelling sales stories and materials.

*Support BusinessWeek advertising initiatives by supplying sales force with new and innovative primary research

 Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years selling research solutions and account management/development, and 5 years experience with quantitative research
  • Innovative approach and ability to work in a collaborative and result-oriented environment
  • Sales development achievement for a major research supplier
  • Ability to analyze raw data to develop marketing strategies for various types of clients in different industries (i.e. technology, financial, consumer products)
  • Strong understanding of marketing research principles and practices pertaining to survey/questionnaire and online panel development
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and project leadership skills and experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of SPSS or other statistical software applications

Insight Creation – Senior Insights Supervisor

MS&L, one of the world’s leading global public relations agencies, seeks a Senior Insights Supervisor for its Insight Creation Practice. The Senior Insights Supervisor will be responsible for taking a leadership role on insight creation, research project management and PR program evaluation projects.

Ideal candidates will be seasoned research professionals with an interest in PR and communications. They will be able to work well with limited direction, capable of exercising sound judgment and initiative, and able to interface independently with internal and external clients in meeting and presentation settings. 

Duties will include:

  • Insight creation - culling and analyzing data and reports from syndicated databases
  • Mining data from syndicated resources to develop trends presentations and POV materials for the agency
  • Audience profiling to support PR program development and new business efforts
  • Research project management including preparing research proposal requests, evaluating vendor proposals, reviewing and developing survey questionnaires, reviewing and writing research reports
  • Providing strategic insights and research counsel to internal and external clients
  • Presenting consumer insights and research to internal and external clients
  • Assisting with the development of agency thought leadership research programs
  • Assisting with the development of junior staff by reviewing their work and providing feedback and guidance
  • Supporting research efforts for PR program evaluation and measurement

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Market Research, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field
  • 7+ years of professional work experience, preferably in market research on the
    supplier side or in the research department of a PR or advertising agency
  • Experience working with syndicated databases and support software such as Simmons, MRI, Yankelovich Monitor, Datamonitor
  • Market research project management experience
  • Experience in communications measurement and evaluation
  • STRONG verbal and written communication skills, experienced presenter preferred
  • Interest in consumer insights and trends
  • Understanding of digital/new media trends
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments/projects
